Featured Member Interview with Christy Martin

When did you start your business and what motivated you to go into business for yourself?

I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I am constantly searching for opportunities to learn, grow and expand. I was licensed as a skin care therapist in 1999 and had built up a wonderful clientele. I eventually I opened a four-room day spa in 2003, purchased a full-service salon in 2017 and now own and operate a full service salon and day spa.

Tell us a little bit about your business?

Sunshine Salon and Spa has been in Poway for over 35 years. We offer hair, nails, facials, massage, eyelash extensions, permanent makeup, makeup and waxing services. We are the largest salon and spa in Poway offering a complete palette of beauty related services

Who is your ideal client/customer?

Everyone!! Men, women, and children of all ages. We all love what we do and want to share our talents with everyone.

What is the one thing that sets your company apart from its competitors?

Our salon and spa professionals take immense pride in offering exceptional services. We take the time to really get to know our guests and personalize both their service and their experience with us.

What is your greatest accomplishment as an entrepreneur so far?

I am so proud of the many talented women who have followed me through this journey.  As a business owner, you must be willing to take advice and be open to change. If my team is successful and happy, then I would consider that to be my greatest accomplishment.

What are your top 3 values in life and business?

Treat others as you wish to be treated. Be kind and respectful. Never stop learning and growing.

What is the most helpful tip or “hack” you’ve ever learned, stumbled across, or been given?

I am quite the “jack of all trades” kind of personality. There is really nothing I am afraid of learning to do or trying to do it. As I have gotten older, and wiser, I have realized that there is only so much time in the day and sometimes it is just better to leave it to the experts.

What’s your favorite funny story about yourself?

Funny story about myself? Where do I begin? I have a fun sense of humor so to pick out one story, well, would be quite difficult. I am short……you can take it from there…..ha ha

What is one food/drink you can’t live without?

Coffee…..Coffee…..Coffee….oh, and creamer!!

Are you a morning or evening person?

Morning

What’s your superpower, or what’s your spirit animal?

My superpower….I would have to say my hands. They can do everything! Plumbing, electrical, cars and even a relaxing facial and massage!

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I  would like to be a bit taller and thinner (oh, that is 2)!!!

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see cast as you?

Sandra Bullock

What is your best advice for women entrepreneurs?

Try to surround yourself with people who inspire you. Always trust your instincts. Have faith in yourself and in God that sometimes you just have to take a step back, breathe and remember, “This too, shall pass”.
