Tell us a little bit about yourself:
As a child, I wanted to be a teacher and then it changed to veterinarian and then doctor. My father had been sick and after dealing with the medical community, I knew I belonged somewhere else. I had my own healing crisis for which the traditional medicinals were of no use. I was allergic to pharmaceuticals so I needed to find another way or give up. Giving up is not in my nature; I always try to find a way. It was through this that I discovered acupuncture and Chinese herbs. It gave me my life back so I wanted to share that with as many people as I could in my life.
What is your professional bio:
I did my undergraduate work at the University of Colorado at Denver, I was a biology major. I attended YoSan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine for my master’s and continued at YoSan to achieve my doctorate in acupuncture and Chinese medicine with a focus on fertility and women’s health.
Why did you start your own business?
I started my practice to help change the world, one patient at a time. I wanted to utilize my own style in my practice and not be restricted. I truly believe that healing comes from three aspects, mental, emotional and spiritual. I wanted to provide something that mainstream medicine does not provide – time. Time to spend with patients and time to listen.
What are you most proud of in your business?
I am most proud of the fact that I educate my patients regarding their condition. Out of the hundreds of patients I have talked with, no other acupuncturist has taken the time to explain to them what is happening to them in Chinese Medical terms and relating it to their body. When a patient understands what is happening, why and what your goals are for their health, they are anxious to be a partner in their wellness journey.
What’s your super power?
Being a good listener. There is time to talk and time to listen with your heart. To be a good healer, you have to be a good listener.
What is one thing you can’t live without?
Dreams – I always have dreams for what I want to do. If I did not have that, my life would have had a much different outcome. We all run into down times but if you can “see” where you want to be, you are halfway there.
What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not running your business?
I have several things I love doing – I absolutely love going geocaching with my nephew. It’s something we can do together, we’re outside and it’s exciting – being on an adventure! The other thing I love is reading poetry by Rumi and cultivating the loving spirit. Then there is Kung Fu that I really enjoy. I try to address the three aspects, mental, spiritual and physical.
What is one thing you wish you knew when you first started?
I wish I had known how long it would take to truly establish a business and had the financial backing which would have eliminated a lot of stress!
Any advice for new entrepreneurs or someone who is thinking of starting their own business?
One of the most important things is to believe in yourself. Mindset is everything. Everyone has slow periods, even if they refuse to admit it. You always have to “see” over the horizon, visualize your appointment book being filled, the phone ringing or see a certain amount in your bank account.
Then do everything you can to help realize your dreams!
