We got a chance to interview Zeena and here is what we learned…

Tell us a little bit about yourself:

I’ve been married to my husband for over 22 years and we have 3 great children.  Although I grew up all over the world, I’ve lived in California since the age of 12 and consider it home.

Why did you start your own business?

I spent over 15 years as a Human Resources professional and a couple of years before that working in the legal field.  Owning my own business has been a rewarding and challenging adventure. Overcoming my fear of failure allowed me to put myself out there and create a business using my creative skills and past experiences.

What are you most proud of in your business?

I believe that as a small business you have to provide a great experience for your client.  I am proud that I have worked very hard to create a business model where my clients feel special and that I am able to offer them superior customer service, a great experience and wonderful portraits for their home.

What’s your super power?

I think it would have to be my ability to get people to relax in front of the camera and capture their true personality.

What is one thing you can’t live without?

Probably my iPad, which is never more than 10 feet away from me!

What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not running your business?

Watching my kids play sports, reading, travelling, going to the beach, watching movies with the family, writing, browsing Pinterest!

What is one thing you wish you knew when you first started?

I wish I had known about the resources and education available to professional photographers. For the first two years I struggled with trying to figure things out on my own when I could have taken advantage of the experience and wisdom of others.

Any advice for new entrepreneurs or someone who is thinking of starting their own business?

Yes! First, don’t let fear hold you back. If you are truly passionate about your business and committed to making it work, you can make it happen. Second, figure out what you will need to learn or outsource to run your business.  As a new business owner starting out, you will need to be able to manage every aspect of your business and chances are you may not have the experience you need in all areas. Lastly, be prepared to venture outside your comfort zone and take some risks.  You never know where you might end up!
